Flying to the Super Bowl? TSA Might Seize Your Favorite Game-Day Items At Security

As Super Bowl LIX approaches in New Orleans, thousands of fans are preparing to fly to the big game. TSA released its recommendation and here is what you need to know before packing to avoid getting your favorite game-day items confiscated at TSA checkpoints.

Face Paint and Body Paint

While showing team spirit is essential, liquid face paint containers exceeding 3.4 ounces won’t make it through security in your carry-on. Pack larger containers in checked luggage, or opt for travel-sized options that comply with TSA’s 3-1-1 rule.

Oversized Fan Gear

Those giant foam fingers and oversized signs might seem perfect for game day, but they could be too large for carry-on compartments. TSA agents may require these items to be checked if they don’t fit through the X-ray machine or could obstruct aircraft storage spaces.

Noisemakers and Sound Equipment

Planning to bring that lucky air horn? Think again. It is typically prohibited both in carry-on and checked luggage due to pressurized contents.

LED Costumes and Light-Up Gear

Battery-powered fan gear can be problematic. Large lithium batteries must comply with airline regulations. Power banks over 100Wh are typically prohibited. Multiple battery packs might require additional screening.

Game Memorabilia

Planning to bring home souvenirs? Be aware that inflated footballs might need deflating for air pressure reasons. Metal replica trophies require additional screening.

New Orleans Souvenirs

If you’re bringing home local Louisiana hot sauce or Kansas City BBQ sauce, make sure it’s in your checked bag. If it’s over 3.4 oz, it won’t be allowed in carry-on luggage. Snow globes larger than a tennis ball aren’t allowed in carry-ons. Wrapped gifts may need to be opened for inspection. TSA only allows empty souvenir beer cans in carry-on or checked bags, but if they still have beer in them, they must go in checked luggage.

Remember, TSA regulations exist for everyone’s safety. When in doubt, check the TSA website or contact your airline directly. Planning ahead can save you from having to surrender valuable items at security checkpoints.

With proper preparation, you can ensure your Super Bowl journey starts smoothly, keeping both your team spirit and travel items intact. Just remember: what might seem like an innocent game-day essential could be viewed differently through the lens of airport security.
