Nestled on the shores of Lough Corrib in Ireland’s County Mayo, Ashford Castle stands as one of the world’s most prestigious luxury destinations. This magnificent 800-year-old fortress, now part of The Red Carnation Hotel Collection, seamlessly blends medieval grandeur with modern sophistication across its sprawling 350-acre estate.
Originally built as a Norman stronghold, the castle has evolved through centuries of rich history, hosting royalty and nobility while maintaining its position as Ireland’s premier Forbes Five-Star hotel. With 83 exquisitely appointed rooms and suites, world-class dining, championship golf, and extensive outdoor pursuits including falconry and fishing, Ashford Castle offers guests an unparalleled royal experience steeped in authentic Irish heritage and hospitality.
Ashford Castle was founded in 1228 by the Anglo-Norman de Burgo family as a medieval fortress on the shores of Lough Corrib. Through eight centuries, it evolved from stronghold to grand estate, passing through notable families including the Brownes and Guinness dynasty. Sir Benjamin Lee Guinness transformed it into a magnificent 26,000-acre estate, while his son Lord Ardilaun developed the gardens and rebuilt the west wing. After serving as the backdrop for “The Quiet Man” in 1951, it became a luxury hotel under various owners.
In 2013, Red Carnation Hotels acquired the castle, undertaking extensive restoration to preserve its heritage while adding modern amenities including Ireland’s first Forbes Five-Star Spa and unique experiences like falconry, creating an authentic Irish sanctuary. Read more about them.
