Just a 35-minute drive south from Zihuatanejo / Ixtapa International Airport, along the Pacific Coastline of Mexico on rolling hills overlooking a beach and small lagoon, sits the quaint property of Playa Viva. This beautiful boutique hotel offers a private beach, with pristine sand and views of the Ocean and nearby mountain range. Originally an ancient civilization of an estimated 500 people where the Lodge now sits. Now the closest town is about 3km away called Juluchuca; with a population of approximately 500 people.

The property covers nearly 200 acres and includes many attractions, including a turtle sanctuary, an estuary, an Aztec archeological site, and the wildlife-abundant coastal forest and mangrove ecosystem. There is something for everyone at this family and pet-friendly home away from home.

Their story

The story of Playa Viva begins with Sandra Kahn, and her husband David Leventhal. After developing Casa Viva Troncones (a B&B 30 minutes north of Ixtapa) and successfully running it for some time, they laid eyes on the area that Playa Viva now sits. It started in 2005 when they fell in love with the property and its area. The beautiful views of the ocean and that quinte lagoon made them invest in the property.  When looking to build on the land, it was important to the couple that they learned the history of the place, to show respect to the land they would be constructing on. Sustainability actions

  • The buildings and the whole construction was planned to preserve the land in its natural beauty for future generations to enjoy.
  • Materials used for the build were sourced from the property whenever possible, including palm fronds, clay used in wall colors, and bamboo. The design elements within the hotel were inspired by the colorful local culture. Many items you will find were hand made by local artisans
  • Extensive research is done, through both local knowledge and scientific research on the best trees to plant as part of the reforestation efforts done here. Elders in the area tell stories of a time of abundance, lush forests brimming with fruit and wildlife, and so many fish in the Ocean. From these folk talkies, comes their focus on reforestation to improve soil quality and water retention, to return this precious area to its previously flourishing state.
  • Playa Viva is 100% solar powered off grid eco lodge.
  • All lighting is LED and most is limited to amber colors to limit the light exposure to the local nesting turtles.
  • Facilities on site such as laundry rooms are also powered by solar energy.
  • There are no air conditioning units in the rooms, rather they are designed to capture the natural cool ocean breeze.
  • Water is sourced from a plentiful well on site, with kitchen water being filtered using an ultraviolet light system. All waste water is filtered through a natural waste-water treatment facility before being released back into nature to replenish the water taken. This process of recycling water allows them to consume a very small amount of water.
  • They also sponsor a local families in need of clean drinking water, by constructing a water well for them and their families.
  • At Playa Viva it is important to them to know exactly where your food comes from, including the names of the farmers who grow it. Priority is given to organic food, and it is always sourced locally. Products are carefully selected with nutritional values in mind to ensure you are eating the highest quality food during your stay.
  • Permaculture is one of the main focus points at this eco lodge. With a thriving garden, filled with organic vegetables, herbs, and an abundance of seeds they welcome you to come into the garden, pick some lush greens for your salad, or just learn more about the vision of sustainability.
  • Permaculture and reforestation are two passions of Playa Viva. Extensive research is done, through both local knowledge and scientific research on the best trees to plant as part of the reforestation efforts done here. The tree planting work done here has the future generations in mind. With harvest 50-100 years down the road, this valuable resource will be here for generations to come.
  • Playa Viva takes part in a program called “Regenerative Trust” ; this is a 2% (optional) premium added to your stay, with 100% of funds going towards the turtle sanctuary, education, health, and economic opportunities to encourage a thriving local economy.
  • Through their work with Verde Ventures of Conservation International and Root Capital they obtained GIIRS certification (a thorough review of the company’s impact). Playa Viva is proud to say they have received a 4 star rating on their most recent report.
