Babanango Game Reserve, in the heart of Zululand, KwaZulu-Natal, represents one of Southern Africa’s most ambitious rewilding projects. Set within the dramatic landscape of the upper White Umfolozi River Valley, this Big Five reserve has successfully reintroduced over 3,000 animals, including endangered black rhino and elephants, over the past five years.

The reserve’s unique partnership model sees 75% of its land leased from local community trusts, ensuring conservation success drives socio-economic upliftment. With its rare Mistbelt Grassland habitat supporting exceptional biodiversity and 75% of permanent staff employed locally, Babanango offers guests an authentic wilderness experience while demonstrating how conservation and community collaboration create lasting positive impact.

Guests can choose from four distinct stays at Babanango Game Reserve. For a luxurious riverside escape, Madwaleni River Lodge offers safari tents with private splash pools along the White Umfolozi River. Alternatively, perched on a cliff, Zulu Rock Lodge features villa-style suites with sweeping views. Meanwhile, Valley Lodge provides a cozy farmstead ambiance, perfect for families and groups. For a more independent adventure, Matatane Camp offers self-catering chalets and tents with kid-friendly activities in a wildlife-free zone.

Their story

Babanango Game Reserve began through a groundbreaking partnership between local Zulu communities and philanthropic investors. Together, they transformed 22,000 hectares of overgrazed land in KwaZulu-Natal into one of Southern Africa’s most ambitious rewilding projects. Built on the belief that conservation and community upliftment must go hand in hand, the reserve operates with 75% of its land leased from three community trusts: Emcakwini, Esibongweni, and KwaNgono. Over the past five years, the team has reintroduced more than 3,000 animals to their ancestral habitat. Read more about them.
