Lowest impact construction and operation
- Cashel Palace Hotel integrates strong sustainability practices, with new buildings meeting NZEB standards (Nearly Zero Energy Building).
- The main building was rebuilt and refurbished during the renovations after 2016, but numerous historic elements were kept like the city wall that is now part of the garden wing.
- To add underfloor heating, the original flagstones were numbered, removed then put in place when everything was completed.
- Cashel Palace also kept the original gate house, carriage house and school house, but refurbished the inside.
- It employed traditional building techniques where appropriate/possible.
Highest level of energy efficiency
- The property’s newer sections are built to NZEB (Nearly Zero Energy Building) specifications.
- It also utilizes air to water heat pump. In 2024, they generated over 63,000 kWs that directly heats the pool.
- It monitors heat recovery meticulously with heat sensors all around the establishment.
- Public areas feature energy-efficient underfloor heating powered by off-peak electricity and monitored with humidity sensors.
- Guest rooms employ key-controlled air conditioning systems to prevent wastage, including shutting the air-conditioning off if the windows are open.
- The hotel uses LED lighting throughout, and photosensitive panels automatically control outdoor illumination.
- The elevators use electric motors that regenerative energy while going down.
Pioneer in waste management
- Their on-site “Garbage Guzzler” system processes food waste, transforming kitchen scraps into rich compost for the hotel’s extensive gardens.
- The hotel has a Compost Soil to Go program where the hotel calculates the average food waste generated by each guest. When guests depart, a paper bag containing an equivalent weight of compost is placed in their car, accompanied by instructions for use in their own gardens, thereby completing the sustainability loop.
- The paper of the welcome note in the rooms is filled with flower seeds. The guests can take home the whole sheet and plant as it is.
Using organic and chemical-free products
- Their kitchen sources ingredients from local producers who follow Origin Green sustainability protocols, significantly reducing food miles.
- The hotel grows its own herbs, lettuces and micro-greens in a pesticide-free vertical farm nearby.
Actively protects nature and community
- Cashel Palace Beehives are working in partnership with Galtee Honey Farm and the Native Irish Honey Bee Society to help restore the Native Irish Black Bee to its rightful place.
- Cashel Palace has a partnership with the Tipperary Food Producers Network and other similar organisations to ensure selection of sustainable goods and services supporting environmental protection, social responsibility, and economic development across Tipperary and its hinterland.
- The hotel has 284 staff members, all of whom are encouraged to volunteer with a local charity or organisation 1 day (8 hours) per year while being paid by the hotel. The only criteria is that the employee is not paid by the charity/organisation and that is noted in advance on their work schedule. For examples, volunteers from Cashel Palace Hotel participated in the “Orchards in the Community” initiative by planting mixed fruit orchards in Fethard Town Park.
- Cashel Palace Hotel supports charitable causes in its local community through fundraising events and volunteer efforts.
