Their story
Praveen Moman founded Mount Gahinga Lodge in 2002 as the first property in the Volcanoes Safaris portfolio. Volcanoes Safaris has pioneered gorilla and chimpanzee ecotourism in Uganda and Rwanda since 1997.
The lodge was created to reflect local culture while supporting conservation, neighbouring communities, and responsible resource management. Its design draws inspiration from traditional African aesthetics, simple bush living, and Mahatma Gandhi’s values.
Known as kienyeji in Swahili, this approach celebrates authentic, locally rooted design rather than conventional luxury. The lodge’s relaxed Afro-chic style combines handcrafted details with an unpretentious and welcoming atmosphere.
Community empowerment remains central to its operations. More than half of management positions are held by women. Around 85% of lodge employees come from neighbouring communities, helping tourism revenue remain within the region.

Lowest impact construction and operation
- The property’s guest bandas are hand-built, reflecting the traditional architectural design and aesthetic traditions of the Bafumbira people.
- The structures utilize a local volcanic stone base with mud and water forming the core of the design, honoring traditional building techniques of the region while incorporating modern comforts like en-suite luxury shower rooms, fireplaces, and private porches.

- The lodge minimizes its environmental impact by utilizing a blended power system consisting of solar power, a generator, and main grid electricity (240 volts).
- Power sockets and charging facilities are provided in the main living areas and guest bandas.
- To reduce energy consumption, the lodge does not use air conditioning, relying instead on natural ventilation and fireplaces.
Pioneer in waste management
- The lodge actively implements eco-friendly practices by harvesting its own rainwater and recycling water and wastewater whenever possible.
- Additionally, the property operates under a strict policy to avoid the use of any unnecessary single-use plastics.

- Volcanoes Safaris is deeply committed to biodiversity and community empowerment through the Volcanoes Safaris Partnership Trust (VSPT). In 2018, they built the permanent Gahinga Batwa Village, providing a permanent settlement, community center, and agricultural land for over 120 displaced Batwa people.
- Other initiatives include the Batwa Vocational Centre, the Batwa Solar Panel Project, and the Batwa Heritage Trail, featuring a demonstration herbal garden to preserve ancient forest traditions.
- The lodge also partners with Gorilla Doctors for veterinary gorilla conservation and actively promotes the Gorilla Friendly™ Pledge to prevent human disease transmission to the endangered mountain gorillas.

Best Time To Visit Mount Gahinga Lodge
- While Uganda is an all-year-round destination due to its equatorial location, the best time to visit is during the dry high seasons, which run from June to September and from December to February. These months offer the most favorable conditions for trekking mountain gorillas, tracking golden monkeys, and climbing the Virunga Volcanoes.
