Their story
Originally acquired as a family holiday home in the 1980s, the estate was abandoned and occupied by both the military and LTTE during Sri Lanka’s 26-year civil war.
The current owners purchased the property in 2003, just a year before the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. Remarkably, the original house’s Dutch-inspired arched windows and doors survived the disaster. Instead of being demolished, the historic building was carefully brought back to life through extensive refurbishment to preserve its character.

- Kalkudah Beach House operates with 100% solar-generated electricity. The property utilizes eighty-six on-site solar panels that produce approximately 5,000 kilowatts of energy every month, which feeds into the national grid and generates enough power to sustain the entire beach house.

- The property features a waste management system focused on reducing, separating, and recycling paper, cardboard, glass, plastic, and metal.
- Organic kitchen waste is separated and composted where possible.
- To eliminate single-use plastics, guests are provided with reusable glassware, crockery, and cutlery, alongside refillable drinking water.
- Additionally, an on-site water purification plant stores 8,000 litres of clean water, allowing every tap to supply drinking water, filling the swimming pool, and irrigating the 25-acre gardens and estate.

- Dining at the property centers on ocean-to-table and locally sourced ingredients. Fresh seafood, such as crab and reef fish, is sourced directly from local fishermen on the beach.
- The hotel aims for zero food miles by growing most of its vegetables and sourcing from local markets, and accommodates vegetarian and vegan dietary requirements.
