Lunuganga is the former country estate of celebrated Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa in Bentota, Sri Lanka. Set beside peaceful Dedduwa Lake, the 15-acre retreat combines tropical modernist architecture with vivid gardens and historic character.
Teardrop Hotels manages the estate, which offers 10 distinctive rooms and suites surrounded by Bawa’s carefully designed landscape. Accommodation includes No. 5 Lunuganga, a historic villa originally designed for renowned Sri Lankan batik artist Ena de Silva.

Their story
Geoffrey Bawa purchased Lunuganga when it was an abandoned rubber estate and transformed it over four decades. The evolving property became one of his most personal expressions of tropical modernist architecture and landscape design.
Bawa established the Lunuganga Trust in 1993 to protect the estate’s architectural, artistic, and cultural legacy. Today, the Trust oversees the property while Teardrop Hotels manages its hospitality operations.
No. 5 Lunuganga adds another important chapter to the estate’s architectural history. Bawa designed the Colombo house in 1962 for celebrated batik artist Ena de Silva and her family.
When demolition threatened the building, conservationists carefully dismantled and reconstructed it near Lunuganga. This preservation project saved an important example of Sri Lankan modernist architecture.
