Lowest impact construction and operation
- Rio Perdido followed a Zero Land-Movement Development philosophy, fitting all key service elements into one main building occupying about 1% of the 1,500-acre reserve.
- Architects used existing geological formations and elevated structures on pylons to conserve the terrain’s natural hydrology.
- Most wood used in construction was farmed under license or came from fallen sources.
- Trail installations utilized existing paths to avoid clearing forest, and engineers used pre-existing paths and clearings to prevent further deforestation.
- The property sources materials, artwork, and ceramics locally, supporting regional artisans and designers.
Highest level of energy efficiency
- Rio Perdido has achieved Elite Level certification from Costa Rica’s Sustainable Tourism Certification programme and holds carbon-neutral certification under INTE B5:2016.
- The resort pledges to reduce, remove, and offset greenhouse-gas emissions.
- All on-site vehicles for guest transport and maintenance are 100% electric, and the property provides free charging stations. The resort promotes electric vehicle use and participates in initiatives aligning with national sustainable-tourism standards.
Pioneer in waste management
- Rio Perdido operates its own collection center for recyclable waste, with all employees trained in recycling practices.
- Most non-organic waste is recycled through an agreement with the Municipality of Bagaces.
- All hotel wastewater is treated and reused for irrigation and reforestation.
- The property injects treated residual water and recirculated pool water back into the land to irrigate young transplants and green areas, supporting ongoing reforestation throughout the reserve.
Using organic and chemical-free products
- The resort grows organic herbs and vegetables in its Mandala Garden & Farm, maintaining hives of indigenous bees to support biodiversity.
- Any produce not grown on-site is sourced from local suppliers to reduce food miles and support local farmers, fishers, and dairy artisans.
- The property uses only biodegradable products for housekeeping, laundry, the kitchen, and pest control, partnering with brands such as Florex, Ecolab, and Greensolutions.
- For spa treatments, they work with Biosfera, a local woman-owned business providing handcrafted organic scrubs, soaps, and oils.
Actively protects nature and community
- Rio Perdido actively protects flora and fauna through staff training from the PUMAS Rescue Center on wildlife management and research with entomologists and botanists to identify and conserve endangered species like the rare Wimmeria excoriata tree.
- Rangers monitor the reserve to prevent illegal hunting.
- Reforestation efforts have expanded protected area from 600 to 1,500 acres, nearly tripling endangered rainforest coverage.
- Around 90% of staff come from nearby communities, many holding management roles.
- The resort offers professional development training and runs environmental education projects with local colleges, while celebrating local culture through traditional events, music, and dances.
